Client Challenge

The client, a 150+ year-old American magazine and multi-platform publisher, was transitioning to a digital-first business model with a subscription-based structure. However, the absence of a strong QA culture and inadequate Quality Assurance (QA) procedures presented difficulties for their engineering team. Their current manual testing procedure was laborious, prone to errors, and not scalable. To guarantee effectiveness, performance, and dependability, the customer had to embrace agile approaches and incorporate QA into the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC).

Approach

Encora was brought on board to assist the client with their digital-first transformation. The services provided by Encora spanned:

  • Test Automation:
    • Implemented AvanTest, our proprietary test automation accelerator, to optimize regression testing and cross-platform and end-to-end testing across web, mobile, APIs, and backend systems 
    • Executed analytics testing to validate the accuracy and performance of data analytics systems within the product

  • Continuous Integration (CI) & Continuous Deployment (CD): Integrated automated tests into the client's CI/CD pipeline using Jenkins, enabling continuous testing and real-time feedback during development 

  • Consulting Services: Helped create QA practices, methodologies, and a quality-first culture within the client’s engineering team through mentoring, process definition, and collaboration

The transformative results achieved by the client with the help of Encora's solution are:

· Enhanced Test Coverage & Frequency: The test frequency was increased from one QA cycle per sprint to multiple cycles per day. This enabled the execution of over 7,500 automated tests daily across frontend, backend, mobile, and APIs, enabling faster issue resolution and quicker releases.

· Reduced Regression Testing Time: The automation framework reduced the regression testing time from three days to just one hour, enabling engineering teams to shift focus from manual testing to innovation.

· Scaled Test Automation: Automating over 1,150 test cases across iOS apps, frontend, backend, and mobile systems provided a scalable automation solution. It met the current demands and supported the client's future expansion.

· Enhanced Data-Driven Decision Making: Validating data flow and accuracy ensured the integrity and accuracy of the analytics systems such as Google Analytics. This enabled the client to make more informed, data-driven decisions.

· Implemented Seamless Subscription Model: The seamless execution of key features like user registration, payment processing, and account management ensured the successful launch of the client's subscription-based revenue model.

· Accelerated SDLC: Embedding QA into the CI/CD pipeline and automating testing reduced the SDLC times, enabling faster content updates, feature releases, and system improvements to maintain competitiveness.
